Build fails with no error code

Using the ESP IDF v4.1-beta2. I have a build that is failing with the error:

ninja: build stopped: subcommand failed.
ninja failed with exit code 1

I can't find a relevant log file for the build, and without an error I'm unsure as to how to proceed. Any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated.

Hi Kaisha,
I am using ESP32 IDF with Visual Studio Code.
And this framework have some windows that can help us with many messages (including errors).
I suggest you use it.

I've tried using the VSCode extension but was never able to get it to work. I'm just using the standard python build script (idf.py) from a command prompt, and this has worked fine for a number of smaller projects. They built fine, errors reported fine, uploaded and ran fine. Its just this last project has just failed without a corresponding error, so I'm not sure what I need to fix. I'm not familiar with make/ninja (I use almost exclusively Visual Studio), so I'm not sure where to start poking around.
