ESP-IDF-Tools 2.3 fails to install IDF v4.2

Postby OllieK » Sat Jan 16, 2021 6:01 am

For the past weeks, I have not been able to install IDF v4.2 in my Windows 10 system. It is failing both with VS Code Extension and ESP-IDF-Tools 2.3. Here is the first error message with ESP-IDF-Tools

Code: Select all

Building wheels for collected packages: esp-windows-curses, gevent

Building wheel for esp-windows-curses (setup.py): finished with status 'done'
                            Created wheel for esp-windows-curses: filename=esp_windows_curses-0.1-py3-none-any.whl size=1170 sha256=6af6a291af6548238baa8379a9ec768713188de956f1d95c709873bc2850c4b7

The IDF v4.1 works OK in my system.

I did complete my studies and tried to install IDF v4.2 on Exclipse. There the corresponding error message was

Code: Select all

Building wheel for gevent (PEP 517) ... error
ERROR: Command errored out with exit status 1:
   command: 'C:\Users\Ollie\.espressif\python_env\idf4.2_py3.9_env\Scripts\python.exe' 'C:\Users\Ollie\.espressif\python_env\idf4.2_py3.9_env\lib\site-packages\pip\_vendor\pep517\_in_process.py' build_wheel 'C:\Users\Ollie\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp0trmjix8'
       cwd: C:\Users\Ollie\AppData\Local\Temp\pip-install-uvgp3_8r\gevent_04a33b3784404ecf99dac521965ddc48
  Complete output (281 lines):
In other words, all my attempts to install IDF v4,2 have failed. At the same time, I can see that developers have questions related to ESP32-S2. This implies that several developers have been able to install IDF v4.2. If you have done that, please let me know how you did it. :?

I am not pleased for the support available in this forum. It is evident, that there are several users, who have had problems in upgrading from V4.1 to V4.2 in order to get support for ESP32-S2. In ideal case, somebody should have advised that this upgrade does require the installation of C++14 or newer.

After hitting my head to the wall for several days, I did notice an error message related to the command "ESP-IDF: Install ESP-IDF Extension Python Packages". This error messages was "hidden" among large amount of text that had no meaning to me.

Next time I know to do these kind of detailed detective work.

This issue is in strict contrast to many other IDF related tools which are clearly giving instructions what is required to fix detected problems. In this case there was just a summary message that the installation had failed.

Summary: I like Espressif hardware, I am not yet a fan of Espressif development tools. :x
