Unable to set wifi channel in station mode

Hi,
I am unable to set wifi channel with 'esp_wifi_set_config'. if I read back with 'esp_wifi_get_config' I get 0.
My hope is that by setting the channel I will reduce/disable the scan-time when searching wifi channels.
