WROOM-32

Postby markwj » Thu Oct 06, 2016 6:07 am

It seems that the current WROOM-32 is using a 4MB flash, and 'open top' design.

Are there plans to release a version of WROOM-32 with 16MB flash?

Are there plans to certify WROOM-32 for modular use?

If so, any idea of timeline?

I believe it will have shielding and certification and hopefully be available at the end of this month. If you are ordering high volume you can probably request 16MB.

The lack of VDD_SDIO exposed on the WROVER modules, along with limited GPIOs, makes adding external flash troublesome.

I really hope that Espressif can release WROOM-32 and WROVER modules with 16MB flash as a standard product. Given the difference in flash price (<$1), and OTA arrangements (factory partition + OTA1 + OTA2), I think it would be a popular offering.

Just wanted to bump this up to the top...

Are there any plans for making the WROOM-32 modules with 16mb flash?

AnalogLamb also sells the ALB-WROOM – ESP32, without psRAM with 4/8/16 MB Flash ($3.49–$4.69).

I've replaced the 4 MB Flash on all my ESP32-WROOM & ESP32-WROVER modules with 16 MB Flash. It is quite simple, cheap, and works without problem.
Of course, if you need larger quantities, it is not something I would recommend.

Unfortunately uncertified and open top design, so not really suited to larger scale projects.

The WROOM-32 module with PSRAM is interesting, but long lead time and just under US$10/module makes it too expensive. WROVERs are still 4MB only.

Given the relatively tiny difference in price between 4MB and 16MB flash, and only about 1MB usable (of 4MB flash) when using factory + 2xOTA partitions, I am really surprised that still nobody is making these as standard offerings.
